In this case "Mela" is short for "melanin" which is the pigment in your skin that can show up as sun damage later in life or melasma (especially during pregnancy). Kojic acid stops the formation of tyrosine, an amino acid crucial to the production of melanin. Halting the pigmentation process fades dark spots and discolored skin areas.
Hydroquinone lightens the skin by decreasing the number of melanocytes present. In cases of hyperpigmentation, more melanin is present due to an increase in melanocyte production. By controlling these little melanocytes, your skin will become more evenly toned over time.

**Darker skin tones should be aware that Hydroquinone is a skin lightening ingredient and may see results of hypopigmentation. Please proceed with caution or even use our Mighty Mandelic serum instead!
